Aruba capital gains tax calculator
Aruba has no general capital gains tax. The one charge on a private gain is the substantial-interest charge: a holder of a quarter or more of a company’s capital in the last five years pays 25% of the gain when the shares are sold. Other shares, funds, crypto and private real estate pay nothing.
Enter a share sale by hand or import your broker’s schedule, and the calculator nets the year’s gains and losses, applies the 25%, carries any loss forward five years, and shows the arithmetic behind the figure. Everything stays in your browser.

Questions
Aruba capital gains questions
Does Aruba have a capital gains tax?
No general one. Profit from selling goods, shares and other assets outside a business is not income under the income tax law. The single charge on a private gain is the substantial-interest charge, which taxes the gain on shares at 25% when the seller held a quarter or more of the company in the last five years.
How much is the tax on a substantial interest?
25% of the gain. The gain is the transfer price less the acquisition price. A sale at or below cost pays nothing.
What counts as a substantial interest?
At least one quarter of a company's nominal paid-up capital, held directly or indirectly at any time in the last five years, counting your spouse and blood or in-law relatives in the direct line and the second degree of the collateral line together with you.
Is tax due on real estate gains?
Not for a private owner. A gain on real estate outside a business is not income under article 8(d). A person who trades property as a business reports the profit as business income.
Are other shares or crypto taxed?
No. A gain on shares below the substantial-interest threshold, on funds and on crypto held privately is not taxed. Profit from trading as a business is business income taxed on the progressive scale.
Is there a general capital gains tax in Aruba?
Aruba has no general capital gains tax. Income tax is charged on the yield of real property, movable capital, business and labour, and periodic payments (article 3(4) of the Landsverordening inkomstenbelasting). Profit from speculation in securities and goods outside a business, and profit from the disposal of goods outside a business or profession, is not income (article 8(c) and (d)). A gain on shares held below the substantial-interest threshold, on funds, on crypto and on real estate held privately is therefore untaxed. What does the law say about substantial interests?
The one charge on a private gain is the substantial-interest charge. The gain on shares in, or profit certificates of, a company whose capital is divided into shares is taxed when the seller has been a shareholder, directly or indirectly, of at least one quarter of the nominal paid-up capital at any time in the last five years, alone or together with the spouse and blood or in-law relatives in the direct line and the second degree of the collateral line (article 11(1)(c)(1)). The charge is 25% of the gain (article 24(5) of the Landsverordening). How is the gain worked out?
Base: the gain is the transfer price less the acquisition price (article 11(1)(c)(2)). Where a price is missing or was agreed under abnormal conditions, the value in the economic order at the time of disposal or acquisition replaces it (article 11(1)(c)(3)). The gain is treated as received when the shares are disposed of (article 11(1)(c)(5)). Succession and matrimonial property transfers count as disposals, but the charge does not apply when the heir lives in Aruba (article 11(2) and (3)). Who pays: residents and non-residents?
Residents and non-residents: a person who lives in Aruba is taxed on the gain (article 1). A non-resident is taxed on the positive gain from disposing of shares in an Aruba-established company when the seller holds a substantial interest in it (article 17(5)). Emigrating from Aruba is itself a disposal of a substantial interest in a company established abroad (article 11(4)). Can losses be claimed?
Losses: the gain on a substantial interest is the transfer price less the acquisition price (article 11(1)(c)(2)) and enters taxable income, which is pure income less the losses to be set off (article 2(2)). A shortfall on one disposal therefore nets against the gains of the same year, and a net loss reduces the taxable income of the next five years, first year first. What if I trade shares or property as a business?
A person who holds and sells shares or property as part of a business or profession reports the profit as business income, taxed on the progressive scale in the income-tax record, not at the flat 25% (article 6(2)(b) and (d)). This calculator computes the substantial-interest charge only. A home used as the main residence produces no taxable yield (article 4(2)). What is the deemed benefit on loans from a company I hold a quarter of?
Since 2023 a loan from a company in which the borrower holds a substantial interest is taxed at 25% as a deemed benefit on the part of the debt above Afl. 500,000 (article 11(1)(d)). What else do the sources say?
Correction: the superseded record treated each disposal's gain as floored at zero with no offset and no carry-forward. Article 15 of the Landsverordening inkomstenbelasting carries a loss computed in a year against the taxable income of the following five years, so the substantial-interest loss nets within the year and carries.
