capitalgainstax.net (the site) and the CapitalGainsTax.net plugin for ChatGPT (the plugin) are operated by Native App Lab (we, us, our). This policy explains what information we handle when you use either of them, why, and the choices you have.
The short version: you never create an account with us, the figures you enter in a calculator stay in your own browser, analytics cookies are set only after you accept them, and the plugin works out your tax without storing what you send it.
The figures you enter in a calculator
Everything you type into a calculator on the site (your tax returns, sales, dates, amounts, income and settings) and every broker or exchange file you import is processed inside your browser and saved in your browser's local storage on your device. It is not sent to our servers and we cannot see it.
The figures stay on your device until you delete them. You can delete a return inside the calculator, or delete everything by clearing this site's data in your browser settings. Files you download from a calculator are saved to your device and are not sent to us.
When the plugin gives you a link to the calculator, your sales and trades travel in the part of the address after the # sign. Browsers do not send that part of an address to the server, so the figures go straight from the link into your browser's storage and the link is then removed from the address bar.
The ChatGPT plugin
When you use the plugin in ChatGPT, OpenAI's systems send our server the details ChatGPT prepares for each request: the country, the tax year, the sales (dates, amounts, costs and any description you gave of the asset), any broker or exchange export you upload in the conversation (the full text of the file) and any list of buys and sells, your income, deductions, earlier losses and settings for that country, and the language of the conversation. Our server reads the trades, runs the calculation and sends the result back to ChatGPT.
We do not store those details or the results. We do not receive your name, email address, OpenAI account details or the rest of your conversation, and we do not use plugin requests to identify you or track you. If a request fails unexpectedly, our server logs the type and time of the failure so we can fix it.
The result card the plugin shows in ChatGPT loads nothing from the internet and sets no cookies. Your use of ChatGPT itself is governed by OpenAI's privacy policy.
Information collected automatically
Like every website, the site receives technical information when your browser requests a page: your IP address, browser and device type, the page requested, the referring page and the time. This information passes through Cloudflare, which provides our domain name and network services, and through the server that hosts the site. It is used to deliver pages, keep the site secure and fix problems, and it is kept only for a limited period for those purposes. Cloudflare may set cookies that are strictly necessary for security; see Cloudflare's privacy policy.
Analytics and cookies
We use analytics to understand which pages and calculators people use, so we can improve them. Analytics cookies are set only after you select Accept in the consent bar.
With your consent we use:
- Google Analytics 4, provided by Google. It sets the cookies _ga and _ga_HY0XJE38QE, which last up to two years, and records the pages you view, how you arrived, your approximate location derived from your IP address, and your browser and device type. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
- PostHog, a product analytics service hosted in the European Union. When it is active it sets a cookie beginning with ph_ that lasts up to one year and records page views and interactions with the site. See PostHog's privacy policy.
Until you choose, and if you select Decline, Google's tag runs in consent mode with analytics storage denied: it sets no analytics cookies, and Google may receive cookieless signals (such as the page viewed, the time and browser information) that it uses only in aggregate. PostHog does not load at all without your consent.
The site also keeps a few items in your browser's local storage that are needed for it to work: your consent choice (cgt_analytics_consent), your chosen language (cgt_lang), which language suggestions you have dismissed, and your calculator data. These are not cookies and are never sent to us.
To change your choice, clear this site's data in your browser settings. The consent bar then appears again on your next visit. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser at any time, or install Google's opt-out browser add-on.
If you email us, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you write. We use it to reply to you and keep the correspondence for as long as needed to deal with your message and any follow-up.
Sponsored placements
Pages on the site may carry sponsored placements from tax professionals and other businesses. We place these ourselves. Sponsors receive no personal information about you from us. If you contact a sponsor or visit its website, the sponsor's own privacy policy applies to what you share with it.
Why we may process your information
Where the EU or UK General Data Protection Regulation applies, we rely on these legal bases: your consent for analytics cookies; our legitimate interest in delivering, securing and improving the site for technical information and failure logs; performing the request you make for plugin calculations; and our legitimate interest in answering you for email.
Who we share information with
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We share information only with the service providers that run the site for us (our hosting provider, Cloudflare, Google, PostHog and our email provider), each of which processes it to provide its service, and with authorities where the law requires us to.
Some of these providers process information outside your country, including in the United States. Where the law requires it, those transfers are covered by appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission's standard contractual clauses or the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
How long we keep information
Calculator figures stay on your device until you delete them. We keep no plugin inputs or results. Technical logs are kept for a limited period for security and troubleshooting. Analytics data is kept for the retention period set in each analytics service. Emails are kept for as long as needed to deal with your message.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask us for access to the personal information we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive a copy of it. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time. Because we hold very little information that identifies you, we may need details from you to find any information that relates to you.
Residents of California have the right to know what personal information is collected, to delete it, to correct it and to opt out of its sale or sharing. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined in California law.
To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected]. We do not charge for a request and we will not treat you differently for making one. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to your local data protection authority, or in Australia to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
Children
The site and the plugin are meant for adults dealing with their own tax affairs and are not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
We update this policy when the site or the plugin changes how information is handled. The date at the top shows when it last changed. Significant changes are announced on the site.
