Brazil capital gains tax calculator

Brazil taxes an individual’s capital gains month by month: a month of stock sales at or under R$ 20,000 is exempt, a month above taxes its whole gain at 15%, day trade pays 20% always, and crypto and other assets face the same pattern against R$ 35,000 with a progressive table above it.

Work out the tax on a share, crypto, property or other-asset disposal from your dates and costs. Enter sales by hand or import your exchange CSVs, and the calculator splits multi-parcel sales under FIFO, groups every month against its cap, and shows the arithmetic behind each monthly DARF. Everything stays in your browser.

PropertyÚnico imóvel exempt up to R$ 440,000 (only property, no other sale in five years); the 180-day reinvestment exempts the matching share of the gain; otherwise the progressive table
LossesExchange losses net within their pool (common or day trade) and carry to later months and years; results of different other-asset sales never net at all
Annual returnGains consolidate in the DIRPF due 31 May of the following year, declared through the GCAP program, never through the carnê-leão

Tables are rendered from the source records retrieved 2026-09-17; each links back to the authority page above. The progressive table applies to a month’s gains, not a year’s, and never to exchange-traded stock gains. The crypto R$ 35,000 monthly cap is the small-value exemption of Lei 9.250/1995 art. 22 applied to crypto as one nature (Solução de Consulta Cosit 214/2021 and 184/2024), not a Lei 14.754/2023 provision.

Questions

Brazil capital gains questions

How much is capital gains tax in Brazil?

It depends on the asset and the month. Listed stocks sold on B3 are tax-free in any month whose total sales stay at or under R$ 20,000; above that the whole month's common gain pays 15% and day trades pay 20%. Everything else (crypto, off-exchange shares, gold, property) is exempt in a month under R$ 35,000 of sales (R$ 20,000 for off-exchange shares) and otherwise pays a progressive table: 15% up to R$ 5 million of gain in the month, 17.5% to R$ 10 million, 20% to R$ 30 million and 22.5% above.

Is the R$ 20,000 stock exemption monthly or annual?

Monthly. The test sums the month's total stock sales: three sales of R$ 8,000 each in one month exceed R$ 20,000 together and the month's whole gain taxes, while the next month starts from zero. A month under the cap drops out whole; a month over taxes its whole gain, with no proportionality.

Can losses be offset in Brazil?

Only on the exchange, and only inside their own pool: common (swing) stock losses cut common gains and day-trade losses cut day-trade gains, within the month and in later months and years, never across. A losing crypto, off-exchange or property sale cuts nothing at all: Brazilian law taxes each such disposal on its own, with no netting between different sales.

How are capital gains taxed in Brazil?

Brazil taxes an individual's capital gains MONTHLY, not annually: every calendar month is its own assessment, the tax is paid by DARF until the last working day of the month following the gain, and the gains never enter the annual adjustment return (Lei 8.981/1995, art. 21, §§ 1º and 2º, as amended by Lei 13.259/2016). The Receita's progressive table for ganho de capital (gains on assets other than exchange-traded stocks): 15% on the part of the month's gains up to R$ 5,000,000.00, 17.5% from R$ 5,000,000.01 to R$ 10,000,000.00, 20% from R$ 10,000,000.01 to R$ 30,000,000.00 and 22.5% above R$ 30,000,000.00. How do B3 stock sales work?

B3 spot equity (ações no mercado à vista das bolsas, plus ouro ativo financeiro): a month's common-trade gains are EXEMPT when the month's total sales of that kind stay at or under R$ 20,000.00 (Lei 11.033/2004, art. 3º, I); when sales exceed R$ 20,000, the WHOLE month's common gain is taxed at 15% (no proportionality), never just the excess. The test runs per month and separately for stocks and financial gold. What about day trade?

Day trade on B3: 20% on the net gain of each month, always, the R$ 20,000 exemption never applies to it (Lei 11.033/2004, art. 2º, I). Common (swing) losses offset common gains and day-trade losses offset day-trade gains, within the month and in subsequent months and years; the two pools never mix and losses never reach back to earlier months. Off-exchange losses never offset exchange gains (they run under the ganho de capital regime instead). What is the small-value exemption?

Other assets (off-exchange shares, crypto, gold, currency, property, goods): the small-value exemption of Lei 9.250/1995, art. 22 (Regulamento, Decreto 9.580/2018, Anexo, art. 35, VI, 'a') exempts a month's gains when the month's total sales of goods of the SAME NATURE stay at or under R$ 20,000.00 for off-exchange shares (mercado de balcão) and R$ 35,000.00 for everything else; above the cap every gain of that nature in the month is taxed, in full, on the progressive table. How is crypto taxed?

Crypto: a crypto-to-crypto trade is a taxable disposal (a permuta, Solução de Consulta Cosit 214/2021, reaffirmed by Solução de Consulta Cosit 184/2024), the month's gains run the same progressive table, and the R$ 35,000 monthly cap counts the month's sales of ALL crypto species together, in Brazil and abroad (Solução de Consulta Cosit 184/2024 cites Regulamento arts. 2º and 35, VI, 'a', item 2 for the cap). Losses on one crypto sale do not cut another sale's gain (see the loss note). The cap is NOT part of Lei 14.754/2023: that law carries no 35,000 figure at all (its crypto lines concern foreign applications; domestic capital gains stay under Lei 8.981/1995, art. 21). How is property taxed?

Real estate: the gain on selling your ONLY property is exempt when the sale value is R$ 440,000.00 or less and no other property was sold in the previous five years (Lei 9.250/1995, art. 23). The 180-day reinvestment rule (in force since 16 June 2005, Lei 11.196/2005, art. 39) exempts the share of the gain matching the proceeds reinvested in another RESIDENTIAL property in Brazil within 180 days of the contract, usable once every five years; the tax on the non-reinvested share is due by the last working day of the month following the new purchase. Anything else runs the progressive table; a property sold for R$ 35,000.00 or less in a month falls under the small-value cap instead. Source: https://www.gov.br/receitafederal/pt-br/assuntos/meu-imposto-de-renda/pagamento/ganhos-de-capital/operacoes-nao-sujeitas

Can losses be offset?

Losses on other-asset sales: each disposal is assessed on its own and results of DIFFERENT sales are never netted, not even within the same month (IN SRF 84/2001, art. 2º, parágrafo único; Perguntas e Respostas IRPF 2026, pergunta 583) - the opposite of the exchange regime, where common and day-trade pools net and carry. A losing off-exchange, crypto or property sale therefore never cuts another sale's taxable gain; cash foreign currency has its own annual US$ 5,000 exemption instead (Lei 11.033/2004, art. 3º, VIII). Source: https://www.gov.br/receitafederal/pt-br/assuntos/meu-imposto-de-renda/pagamento/ganhos-de-capital/operacoes-nao-sujeitas

When is the tax paid?

Reporting and payment: gains de capital are assessed in the Receita's GCAP program month by month and paid by DARF (carnê-leão is for other income, never for these gains); the deadline is the last working day of the month after the month of the gain, and the gains never join the annual adjustment base (Lei 8.981/1995, art. 21, §§ 1º and 2º).
