Greenland capital gains tax calculator

Greenland has no capital gains tax. A private sale of shares, crypto, property or anything else you own is tax-free. Three kinds of gain are taxed as income instead: assets bought to resell at a profit, financial contracts, and bonds with a coupon below the minimum rate. They pay your municipality’s combined rate, 42% to 44% in 2026.

Enter your sales by hand or import your Nordnet and crypto CSVs. The calculator sorts each sale into the tax-free private sale or one of the three taxable rules, applies the DKK 5,000 tax-free B-income and your personfradrag, and shows the income tax the gains add. Everything stays in your browser.

Rules current as of 2026-09-30, from the Greenland income tax act (Landstingslov om indkomstskat) and the sources each record cites.

Questions

Greenland capital gains questions

Is there capital gains tax in Greenland?

No. Greenland's income tax act leaves the profit or loss on selling your own assets out of taxable income (section 34(1)(2)). Selling shares, funds, crypto, your home or a boat as a private investor is tax-free, whatever the holding period and the size of the gain.

When is a gain taxed in Greenland?

In three cases: the asset was bought to resell at a profit or in the course of a trade (section 34(1)(2)); the gain is on a financial contract such as an option, future or CFD (section 17); or the gain is on a bond or other money claim whose coupon was below the minimum interest rate when it was issued (section 18). The gain is then B-income taxed with your salary at your municipality's combined rate, 42% to 44% in 2026.

Do Danish capital gains rules apply in Greenland?

No. Greenland has its own income tax act, the Landstingslov om indkomstskat, administered by Skattestyrelsen in Nuuk. The Danish share income rates and the Danish property gains rules do not apply to a person taxed in Greenland.

Why are private sales tax-free in Greenland?

Greenland has no capital gains tax. Section 34(1)(2) of the Greenland income tax act (Landstingslov om indkomstskat) leaves out of taxable income any profit or loss on selling your own assets, except depreciable business assets and assets acquired in your trade or for speculation. A private sale of shares, funds, crypto, a home or a boat is tax-free at any holding period.

What counts as buying for speculation?

An asset bought for speculation, meaning bought to sell again at a profit, or bought in the course of a trade, is the exception: its gain is taxable income and its loss is deductible. The gain is B-income taxed at your combined rate of landsskat 10%, fælleskommunal skat 6% and your municipality's kommuneskat (20% to 30%), so 42% to 44% in every municipality in 2026.

How are options, futures and CFDs taxed?

Gains on financial contracts (options, futures, forwards, swaps, CFDs) are always taxable income under section 17(1). Losses on financial contracts offset only gains on financial contracts: first in the same year, then carried forward against later years' net contract gains under section 30 (five years, ten if you notify Skattestyrelsen each year).

How are bond gains taxed?

Gains on bonds and other money claims are taxable under section 18 when the claim's coupon was below the minimum interest rate (mindsterente) Skattestyrelsen fixed for the year it was issued. Only the gain is taxed; a loss on such a claim gives no relief. A claim with a coupon at or above the minimum rate follows the general rule and is tax-free unless bought for speculation.

How is crypto taxed in Greenland?

Crypto has no rule of its own in the Greenland income tax act. A crypto holding is an asset like any other under section 34(1)(2): tax-free when held as a private investment, taxable income when bought for speculation or traded as a business.

Is there tax when I sell my home in Greenland?

Selling your home or other property privately is tax-free under section 34(1)(2), unless you bought it for speculation. Greenland has no tax on property for private use; registering a deed of transfer carries a 1.5% stamp duty on the transfer sum.

What is the DKK 5,000 tax-free B-income?

B-income, meaning taxable income with no A-tax withheld at source, is taxed only on the part of the year's total above DKK 5,000 (section 20). Every taxable gain is B-income, so the first DKK 5,000 of the year's B-income, gains included, is tax-free.

When do I report and pay?

Taxable gains, and deductible speculative losses, join your other taxable income for the calendar year. Report them in the tax return (selvangivelse) due 1 May of the following year; residual tax is paid in three instalments on 20 September, 20 October and 20 November.
