Suriname capital gains tax: no separate tax, business gains are income

Suriname levies no separate capital-gains tax, so the tax on your investment gain is zero. Shares, crypto and property alike, a private disposal attracts no separate capital-gains levy. What matters instead is whether the gain is realised inside a business or through habitual dealing, and the taxes that do apply, 10% VAT on consumption, wealth and rent-value taxes on ownership, are not taxes on the gain.

Questions

Suriname capital gains tax questions

Does Suriname have a capital gains tax?

No separate one. The government's EITI Suriname report states that no separate capital-gains tax is levied and that capital gains inside a business are taxed as ordinary income. For a passive private investor, the gain itself attracts no capital-gains tax.

When would a gain be taxed?

When it is realised inside a business or through habitual dealing. Those gains fall into ordinary income tax, with the government's current individual schedule reaching 38% in the top band. A private disposal outside business dealing does not get there.

What taxes apply instead?

Consumption and ownership, not gains. VAT applies at a standard rate of 10% and has been in force since 1 January 2023, when it replaced the former turnover tax. Suriname also administers wealth tax and rent-value/property-related taxes, but those are ownership or income taxes, not taxes on a net capital gain.

Is crypto taxed in Suriname?

Not by a separate capital-gains tax. The official framework's no-CGT position is not limited to particular asset classes; what matters is whether the disposal amounts to business or habitual dealing, which would bring it into ordinary income tax.

What exactly does the official framework say?

Suriname levies no separate capital-gains tax: the government's EITI Suriname report states that no separate CGT is levied and that capital gains inside a business are taxed as ordinary income, so the no-CGT result applies to the absence of a separate passive capital-gains levy. Do wealth or property taxes touch the gain?

Suriname also administers wealth tax and rent-value/property-related taxes; these are ownership or income taxes, not taxes on a net capital gain. Source: https://eitisuriname.gov.sr/en/about-suriname/governmental-structure/ministry-of-finance/
