Norway capital gains tax calculator

Norway taxes gains inside general income: shares pay 37.84% of the gain left after the skjermingsfradrag shield under the shareholder model, while crypto, other capital income and property pay the flat 22%. Your own home is exempt when you used it 12 of the last 24 months.

Work out the tax on a share, crypto or property disposal from your dates and costs. Enter sales by hand or import your Nordnet or exchange CSVs, and the calculator splits multi-parcel sales under FIFO, applies each card’s rate and shows the factor arithmetic behind the final figure. Everything stays in your browser.

Questions

Norway capital gains questions

How much is capital gains tax in Norway?

Shares and equity funds pay 37.84% of the gain that remains after the skjermingsfradrag shield (the 1.72 adjustment factor times the 22% rate). Crypto, foreign currency, collectibles, unlisted debt and taxable property pay the flat 22% on the actual gain. General income is its own base, so your salary never changes these rates.

How is the gain calculated?

Sale proceeds minus selling costs, against what the asset cost you plus acquisition costs and, for property, improvements. On shares, the skjermingsfradrag shield then comes off the gain before the adjustment factor; the shield is the risk-free return accumulated on what you paid and can only reduce a gain, never create a loss.

Do losses reduce the tax?

Yes, at the class's own rate: a share loss deducts at 37.84% (the factor applies to losses the same as gains), crypto and property losses at 22%. The deductions net against the tax on the year's gains and the result is floored at zero; a deficit carries forward to later years.

How are share gains taxed under the shareholder model?

Share gains are taxed under the shareholder model: the gain is reduced by the skjermingsfradrag shield, multiplied by the adjustment factor (1.72 for 2026) and taxed at the 22% general income rate, an effective 37.84% of the post-shield gain. What rate applies to share losses?

Share losses carry the same factor: the deduction rate is the factor times 22% (37.84% under the 1.72 factor). Source: https://www.skatteetaten.no/en/rates/factor-for-upward-adjustment-of-gainloss-or-dividend-on-shares/

What is the skjermingsfradrag shield and how do I get it?

The skjermingsfradrag shield is the risk-free return on the acquisition value, accumulated per holding year; it cannot turn a gain into a loss. This app takes it as an optional per-sale input defaulting to zero, which overstates the tax. Skatteetaten's own calculator computes it: https://www.skatteetaten.no/person/skatt/hjelp-til-riktig-skatt/aksjer-og-verdipapirer/om/aksjonarmodellen/

How is crypto taxed?

Crypto is taxed as capital income at 22% on the actual gain, with no factor; losses are deductible at 22%. Source: https://www.skatteetaten.no/person/skatt/hjelp-til-riktig-skatt/aksjer-og-verdipapirer/om/virtuell-valuta/skatteregler---virtuell-valuta/

Is my home exempt?

Yes, when you have owned the home over a year and used it as your own home for at least 12 of the last 24 months before the sale: the gain is fully exempt and losses are not deductible. A holiday home is exempt when you used it as your own holiday home in at least five of the last eight years before the sale, and the sale is more than five years after you acquired it and more than five years after the property was taken into use (ferdigattest). No age-based extension exists in the current rule.

Can the cost base of a property be adjusted for inflation?

Only for the oldest properties. The acquisition value of real property may be adjusted upward (oppregulering) when the ownership period runs from 1990 or earlier; properties bought from 1991 on get no indexation. This calculator takes the adjustment as an optional percentage of the cost base, left at zero by default.

Are small foreign-currency gains exempt?

No. Norway taxes every krone of a foreign-currency gain as capital income at 22% under skatteloven section 9-9, including currency held for personal use, and losses are deductible. The often-quoted NOK 25,000 figure is not a tax rule at all: it is the Norwegian customs declaration limit for carrying cash across the border (Tolletaten, toll.no), and neither Norway nor Sweden has a currency-gain threshold.
